Human Trafficking Awareness
Today is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. What can you do? Buy fair trade.  Stop looking at porn and buying sex.  Donate to survivor services. I have seen and support Word Made Flesh and IJM. Educate yourself and your community on what trafficking looks like. Put the number of the National Trafficking Hotline in your phone: 888-3737-888

Wednesday: Give a little.
Last week I kind of skipped Give a Little. I think the unspoken message was you know what, I’m a teeny bit sick of giving. It’s hard to pretend that giving gets me jazzed every day of the week. I’m going through a phase right now in which I’ve gotten so big picture I can’t even tell what I care about anymore or which organizations are effective. And what does...

Tiny Spark
My new favorite podcast is Tiny Spark — a Chronicle of Philanthropy podcast about the business of doing good. The difficult thing about being a funder is that you have to take the emotion out of giving - Yes, I understand that you give kittens to poor people and that it’s adorable, but who cares?  In a smaller but equally meaningful sense, we all give back to charities that make us...

Wednesday: Give a little.
Give a little is about simple solutions. Unfortunately, in developing countries, the simplest thing can keep girls behind in school for awhile and then forever — PERIODS. Yes, I said it. In Kenya alone, girls will miss 3.5 million learning days in school a month while on their periods because they can’t afford the simplest of solutions. Zana Africa lets you donate $10 to get a Kenyan...

Wednesday: Give a little.
Here’s the thing about giving — it’s better to consistently support a program that works than jump around from one hot issue to the next. Small, steady investments allow nonprofits to grow intentionally and help them to fine tune their mission and methods. And if something works, it should hopefully continue to work. KIVA got super popular around the time I was in grad school (I...

What I learned - Rachel Lloyd
New blog feature! What I learned. So that I focus more on what I’m learning instead of which opinion I’m stubbornly sticking to. Last week I went to hear Rachel Lloyd of GEMS in New York and the book Girls Like Us. She’s great. She’s been doing aftercare with trafficked girls for 15 years and has lots of wisdom: Don’t use PIMP. Why do we say that’s pimp to...

International Women's Day!
Today is International Women’s Day. Give to the empowerment, healing, enrichment, education and future of a girl.  Support a sister in a conflict zone through Women for Women International. Read Half the Sky. Help a woman repair her fistula and get on with her life.    Support a woman in business. Buy her wares or give her a loan. Volunteer to help girls with STEM (science, technology,...

Wednesday: Give a little.
My favorite gift to give when I was in high school was the donation of an animal through Heifer International. My family wrote me off then and there as both a do-gooder and a lost cause since I would never get them what they truly wanted — in the case of my brother, ammo. For this Wednesday’s give a little, only $20 can provide a flock of ducks (who doesn’t love ducks!) to a...

Heavy Laden
At church this morning, the pastor read an essay from a McSweeney’s contest winner that totally resonated with me. I went to find some of her other articles and came across this essay, Heavy Laden, about her work with Somali Bantu refugees: During that particular spring break I decided the art class would be a sort of free-form “process” kind of event (i.e. throwing a few crayons and...

Wednesday: Give a little.
Snoball is an online platform to collect giving incentives and promote causes. As a member, you set up automated donations that go to your designated charity. For example: “Every time I fail a test, I donate $1 to the Red Cross.” or “Every time Newt Gingrich wins a primary, I donate $100 to Planned Parenthood.” Have fun with it.

Wednesday: Give a little.
This is the Give a Little Lenten edition. Lent is a short season, 40ish days between Ash wednesday and Easter in the Christian liturgical calendar, for self examination, reflection and fasting . These are some questions I found you’re supposed to ask yourself about Lent: Am I sharing gladly what I have with others, especially the stranger and the poor? Do I have a gracious and patient...

It takes a couple of seconds to install the GoodGuide Toolbar on your computer — a customizable tool that rates products according to your values when you’re shopping online. Right now, it works on Amazon, Target and Walmart and it will soon roll out to more sites. You choose if you care if products are fair trade, recyclable, kind to animals or organic and it rates items for you as...
