Wednesday: Give a little.
The last couple of Give a Littles have been transactional in nature - SwipeGood & Common Kindness - and today’s is no exception. (Even though a friend let me know that Swipe Good (perhaps due to its terrible name) has gone out of business). Good Shop partners with over 2,500 retailers (Apple! Walmart! Barneys! Amazon!) to donate a percentage of your purchase to a charity. If you’re going to buy it anyway, might as well benefit a charity.
There are so many transactions online these days and it’s nice that some of the money being made on them can go to do good. Additionally, these organizations require very little on the part of the user. You already shop, you already buy things — it’s passive but important participation in a cause. Many people tell me they can’t/don’t want to move overseas and help or can’t commit to volunteering because they’re stretched thin. One thing we can do, no matter what our lives are like, is shop. We are Americans, dammit. This is what we do. For good or for bad, for need or for excess, we buy things constantly. Why not make it count?
